It seems so simplistic to outline the principles and values that we, as Americans, live by. Yet, in the world as it has become recently, it has seemed to become necessary to actually take a look at what our core beliefs are.

I think that over the years, we have gotten fat, lazy and way too comfortable. I think that Americans have forgotten what its like to have to be uncomfortable or to have to struggle. We’ve forgotten that the entire world doesn’t live the way we live. We think we are sacrificing if we decide to stay at the Holiday Inn instead of the Hilton. When I read what people write about life during the Great Depression, I realize we don’t know what hardship is. When I read what people write about life during World War II, I realize we don’t know what its like for our nation to be at war. We aren’t making sacrifices, just the few who have gone to war have sacrificed for us. The rest of us have gone on with life as usual and have prospered.

We have so much prosperity that we have come to believe that is the norm. We have forgotten how to put others before ourselves. We have forgotten how to put our country before ourselves. We are selfish and petty and spoiled.

With the events of the past year, I think many of us have stepped back for a minute and looked at what has been happening around us. It is frightening to look at. Taking our freedom and prosperity for granted has put us on the verge of losing it all. We need to step back and go back to our core values.

Glenn Beck held a forum earlier tonight that we live blogged here. He thesis is that we need to remember we are not alone, we are not surrounded, in fact … We Surround Them. He laid out his list of nine principles and twelve values that are the core of our belief system. I’ve listed them below. They seem so commonsensical that it seems odd to have to list them. But apparently we do need to.

During his special he introduced his new website, The 912 Project (the912project.com). He describes it as a place for like-minded people to come together for reassurance that they are not alone. As Beck pointed out in his show, we have to support each other, we need to Unite, or Die.

There are many people who value their privacy and are looking for ways to protect their private phone calls. Today, everything is being monitored due to our new global climate.

The big question is... With all the surveillance being conducted, is there still a way to protect our phone call communications?

I believe there is and here are a few examples and a fabulous alternative.

You can purchase a pre-paid cell phone or a pre-paid phone card. If you chose either of these options, I highly suggest you pay cash for these items as all credit card purchases are tracked and monitored.

Here are the limitations of using a pre-paid cell phone and a pre-paid phone card.

Using a pre-paid cell phone works just fine for protecting your privacy but you can only use that particular phone to place private calls...What if you didn't have your phone with you or your minutes have run out and you need to place an important call immediately?

Using a pre-paid phone card works just fine but there are some people who are concerned the caller ID will show-up from where they are calling. At the time of this writing, I found the pre-paid cards sold at the .99 cent stores actually protected the caller ID where as the pre-paid cards from 7/11, Sam's Club and Cosco did not. If you choose to use this approach, I suggest you place all calls from a public phone rather than from your home, a friend's home or from your place of work.

You can conduct your own caller ID investigation by simply using the pre-paid phone card and calling a friend who has caller ID and ask them what number appears on their call ID screen.

Since the above examples can work but each has their downside, I was motivated to search out a better alternative... And low and behold I found one.

I believe the best of both worlds would be a way where you could actually protect your calls from any phone, have the ability to change your caller ID on the spot, change your voice if you so chose and to record the call. Just imagine what kind of privacy that could provide.

After a rigorous search I found the answer. It's a service that's easy to use, works like a charm and is very affordable without a contract of any kind.

Phillips 66 Women's Championship Begins On Thursday

Jayhawks Up To Now: The Jayhawks started 2-8 in conference play but recovered to win four of its last five. Junior guard/forward Danielle McCray, a first team All-Big 12 selection, has led the late surge. She has averaged 26.8 points and 10.8 rebounds over the five games. Sophomore center Krysten Boogaard has provided solid play in the low post.

Cornhuskers Up To Now: Nebraska has won four of its last five with the loss coming at Kansas. The Cornhuskers lost nine of its first 10 games starting from January to mid-February. Nebraska has struggled offensively and with rebounding.

Key Players: Kansas - Junior guard/forward Danielle McCray, sophomore center Krysten Boogaard, senior guard Ivana Catic, junior guard Sade Morris; Nebraska - Junior forward Cory Montgomery, junior guard Yvonne Turner, sophomore center Catheryn Redmon, sophomore guard Dominique Kelley.
Kansas Wins: If McCray continues her strong play. The junior's ability to score inside and from the 3-point line makes her difficult to guard. If she's able to score at least 20, the Jayhawks have a good chance of winning.

Nebraska Wins: If the Cornhuskers take care of the ball and force Kansas into mistakes. Nebraska can boost its offensive production by getting easy baskets from turnovers. The Jayhawks are last in the Big 12 in turnover margin.

Previously: The teams split their two regular-season meetings. Nebraska won at home, 67-58, on Jan. 21 while Kansas won in Lawrence, 70-57, on Feb. 28.

Big 12 Championship History: Kansas is 8-12 in Big 12 postseason play, while Nebraska is 7-12.

Kansas State Up To Now: The Wildcats lost four of their last eight games but most of those defeats can be attributed to senior point guard Shalee Lehning being limited by mononucleosis. Three of Kansas State's six Big 12 losses came on the road to ranked teams. Junior forward Ashley Sweat is the team's top scorer.
Colorado Up To Now: The Buffaloes were derailed when junior guard Whitney Houston was lost for the season to a knee injury. Inexperience and a lack of depth contributed to Colorado finishing last in the standings. Sophomore forward Brittany Smith is an outstanding all-around player who leads the team in scoring and rebounding.

Key Players: Kansas State - Senior guard Shalee Lehning, senior forward Marlies Gipson, junior forward Ashley Sweat; Colorado - Sophomore forward Brittany Spears, senior center Kara Richards, junior guard Bianca Smith.

Kansas State Wins: If Shalee Lehning shines. These teams played last Saturday in Boulder and the Wildcats won behing Lehning's triple double. Lehning, a senior point guard, has been recovering from mononucleosis. If she can get the ball to forwards Ashley Sweat and Marlies Gipson, Kansas State should win.

Colorado Wins: If the Buffaloes bring the defensive pressure. Colorado is last in the Big 12 in scoring defense and next to last in scoring offense. The Buffs can advance to the quarterfinals only if they force some turnovers and keep Lehning out of the lane.

Previously: Kansas State won both games - 72-60 in Manhattan on Feb. 21 and 71-61 in Boulder on March 7.

Big 12 Championship History: Kansas State is 11-12 in Big 12 postseason play, while Colorado is 8-11.

Lady Raiders Up To Now: Texas Tech had a promising beginning to conference play, knocking off Texas in Lubbock. The Lady Raiders, though, followed that up by losing three of their next four. Tech closed out conference play by losing five of its last seven.

Cowgirls Up To Now: Oklahoma State, which made the NCAA Tournament last seson, has had a disappointing season. At the beginning of February, the Cowgirls faced a five-game schedule of Texas, Oklahoma, Baylor, Kansas State and Texas. Oklahoma State won just one of those games. Junior guard Andrea Riley led the Big 12 in scoring but the Cowgirls lacked second and third scorers.

Key Players: Texas Tech - Senior forward Dominic Seals, junior guard Jordan Murphree; freshman center Kierra Mallard; Oklahoma State - Junior guard Andrea Riley, senior forward Shaunte Smith, junior forward Tegan Cunningham.

Texas Tech Wins: If it controls the pace. The Lady Raiders can't afford to get in a full-court contest with Oklahoma State. Texas Tech has its most success if the game stays in the 60s. A fast-paced game would favor Oklahoma State and point guard Andrea Riley.

Oklahoma State Wins: If someone other than Andrea Riley steps forward as a scorer. Riley is jet quick and capable of scoring 30.

Previously: The teams split their two regular-season game with each winning on the other's court. Oklahoma State won 65-60 in Lubbock on Jan. 31 while Texas Tech won in Stillwater 74-70 on Feb. 21.

Big 12 Championship History: Texas Tech is 13-10 in Big 12 postseason play, while Oklahoma State is 8-12.

Longhorns Up To Now: The Longhorns appeared to be gaining momentum when they put together a five-game winning streak to start February. But Texas frittered that away with a stumbling finish. UT struggled offensively as it lost five of its last six. Senior forward Ashley Lindsey has been steady. Junior guard Brittainey Raven is one of two Longhorns averaging double figures.

Tigers Up To Now: Missouri never recovered from losing eight of its first nine Big 12 games. Alyssa Hollins is the only senior on the roster and the Tigers' inexperience showed as they battled through the Big 12 season. Missouri displayed some of its potential with a 52-43 victory over Kansas State on Feb. 18.

Key Players: Texas - Junior guard Brittainey Raven, freshman forward Ashleigh Fontenette; sophomore guard Kathleen Nash; Missouri - Senior guard Alyssa Hollins, junior forward Jessra Johnson, sophomore guard RaeShara Brown.

Texas Wins: If its offense wakes up. The Longhorns have plenty of depth but they need to have key players like Raven and Nash step forward with offensive contributions. In its last five games, Texas is averaging 18 turnovers and just eight assists. Those numbers need to be less skewed.

Missouri Wins: If it forces turnovers. Texas has struggled offensively in recent games, particularly when it comes to ball security. If the Tigers - who are second in the conference in forcing turnovers - can disrupt the Longhorns and produce some easy baskets, they've got the ability to pull an upset.
Previously: Texas won at Missouri, 66-56, on Feb. 24.

Big 12 Championship History: Texas is 15-11 in Big 12 postseason play, while Missouri is 6-12.

Baylor Proud: Men’s Hoops Bounces Top-Seed Kansas from Big 12 Tournament

You could hear the cheers erupt around the building here this afternoon as the Baylor men’s basketball team pulled off the biggest upset in Big 12 Tournament history, knocking off the top-seeded and 11th-ranked Kansas Jayhawks 71-64 in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.

Head coach Scott Drew had never before seen his team defeat Kansas; in fact, the Bears had lost eight in a row to the Jayhawks since beating them on Big Monday in 2001. Even more impressively, only once before had the Big 12’s top seed lost its opening game; that came in 2001 when conference champion Iowa State was defeated by — you guessed it — the Baylor Bears.

Today’s win put Baylor front and center on the front pages of ESPN.com, CBSsports.com and SI.com, among others; in fact, as I write this, SI.com has Baylor basketball (beating KU) and Baylor football (lineman Jason Smith, a likely top NFL pick) as its main two stories.

The Baylor men will next face the winner of this afternoon’s game between 5th-seed Texas and 4th-seed Kansas State; the semifinal match-up will tip off Friday at 6 p.m. and will be televised on the Big 12 Network (check BaylorBears.com for listings). After a first-round bye, head coach Kim Mulkey’s No. 7-ranked Lady Bears also begin their Big 12 Tournament run as the conference’s No. 2 seed Friday at 5 p.m. on FSN.

Hokies Lead Wire-to-Wire in ACC Tournament Win Over Miami

ATLANTA – Even though the Hokies had lost three straight and six of seven down the stretch against a brutal schedule, Virginia Tech head coach Seth Greenberg kept telling people that his team was actually playing well.

In the first round of the ACC tournament, they played great.

Tech played arguably its best all-around game of the season, leading front start to finish, holding Miami to its smallest scoring output in more than four years, and using a 14-0 second-half run to pull away in a 65-47 hammer job of the Hurricanes on Thursday afternoon at the Georgia Dome.

The all-important victory – Tech’s second over the ’Canes this season – snapped that three-game Tech skid and moved the Hokies to 18-13 overall on the season. Miami, which came into the game having won three of its past four, fell to 18-12 overall and lost to the Hokies in the ACC tournament for the second straight season.

“I told them – ‘Don’t be afraid,’” Greenberg said of the message to his team entering the tournament. “Just go out and play. Trust yourselves. Play to win and enjoy the moment. That was my biggest focus.

“There is so much pressure about the [NCAA] tournament that they lose track of [the fact] that, two years ago, they were riding in vans to AAU games and playing at 8 o’clock in the morning and then 2 and then 4. I wanted them to enjoy this because they had worked to get to this point. Hopefully, that helped us just relax and go out and play.”

Tech knocked off Miami 88-83 in overtime in the teams’ first meeting this season. But the Hokies quelled the ’Canes this time by playing superb defense, holding Miami to its smallest scoring output since registering just 43 points in a loss to Louisville on New Year’s Eve in 2005.

It was also the smallest amount by a Tech opponent in an ACC tournament game. Miami, which missed eight of its first nine attempts, shot just 34.6 percent from floor, the lowest percentage by an ACC opponent against the Hokies this season.

Perhaps more impressively, the Hokies held Miami’s sensational Jack McClinton to just nine points – tying a season-low for him. The first-team All-ACC guard went into the game averaging 19.7 points per game, but the combination of Dorenzo Hudson and Malcolm Delaney held the senior from Baltimore to just 4-of-11 from the floor and 1-of-6 from beyond the 3-point arc. McClinton did not get to the free-throw line and he also turned the ball over seven times, which marked a season high.

“I feel like, as a team, we did a good job on him,” said Hudson, who started and scored seven points. “I was chasing him real hard and the big men were doing a good job of stepping out on ball screens. Sometimes, I’d deny him the ball, and other times, if he caught it, I’d close out real hard on him with my hands high. It was a collective effort.
“I knew I was going to guard him, but I didn’t think I’d see him that much because Malcolm and J.T. [Thompson] did a good job on him the last time. I guess it was my time. They switched him [McClinton] over to the 2 and it was my time to guard him, so I tried to see what I could do.”

“We guarded him by committee,” Greenberg said. “It wasn’t just Malcolm and it wasn’t just Dorenzo. It was the guy playing the passer and the guy playing the screener. There was a lot to it. It was a collective team effort because he’s such a good player.”

The Hokies led by as many as 14 in the first half, but by just four at halftime as Miami closed the half with a 9-0 run. In the second half, the Hokies built the lead back to 11, but again, the ’Canes came back, cutting the lead to 43-37 on a 3-pointer by Lance Hurdle with 10:55 left in the game.

But Tech responded with that game-clinching 14-0 run. Fueled by Thompson’s six points in the run, the Hokies opened a 57-37 bulge on Thompson’s basket with 7:15 left. Miami got no closer than 18 the rest of the way.

Thompson played one of his best games of the season, coming off the bench to score 12 points and grabbed eight boards in 23 minutes. The sophomore from Monroe, N.C., hit all five of his shot attempts and 2-of-4 from the free-throw line.

“I think we’re better when I give a little more,” Thompson said. “Today, I was able to score and grab some rebounds. It doesn’t matter if I start or come off the bench as long as I’m giving the team something.”

“He was the energizer bunny,” Greenberg said. “He gave us great toughness today. He was flying around.

“The three keys to the game were we did a very good job on McClinton, we knew they were going to open in a zone and we were poised against the zone early on, and J.T. gave us an energy off the bench.”

Delaney led the Hokies with 17 points, with 14 of those coming from the free-throw line. He hit just 1-of-10 from the floor, but canned 14-of-15 from the stripe, and he also dished out eight assists, tying a career high. A.D. Vassallo added 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Vassallo’s two 3-pointers in the game to break the Tech career record for 3-pointers. He now has 258 for his career, breaking Wally Lancaster’s mark of 257 set from 1986-89.

For the game, Tech shot 50 percent from the floor – its first 50 percent performance since knocking off Virginia at Cassell Coliseum in early January and just its third of the entire season. The Hokies also pounded Miami on the glass, out-rebounding the bigger ’Canes by a margin of 35-22.

Tech now gets set for its next challenge. In a rematch of a quarterfinal game last year, the Hokies take on No. 1 North Carolina on Friday at noon in a quarterfinal match-up at the Georgia Dome. The Hokies lost to the Tar Heels 86-78 a little over a week ago at Cassell Coliseum.

Kentuky Basketball: Time for Kentucky to act like KENTUCKY

So Lee Todd says that Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart will sit down with head basketball coach Billy Gillispie at the end of the season and then report back to the president on the status of the program.

If I could sit in on either meeting, I'd have just one piece of advice:

If you're Kentucky, be KENTUCKY!

That means:

1. Sign the contract. If Billy Gillispie is to remain as coach, he needs to sign the formal contract. Barnhart should demand it. Now.

I know, some say the contract is a non-issue considering there is a memorandum of understanding between the two parties. They're wrong. It's a symbolic issue, and an important one.

This is Kentucky basketball, after all. Either Gillispie wants to coach at Kentucky under the terms of a formal contract, or he doesn't. If he doesn't, there are plenty more coaches out there who would gladly take the pen.

2. Quit talking about softening the schedule. The schedule is too soft now. Stats whiz Ken Pomeroy ranked UK's non-conference schedule 243rd in the nation this season. True, Indiana's rare rock-bottom season didn't help. But there are too many Longwoods, Delaware States, Lamars, Mississippi Valleys and Florida Atlantics on the slate.

The excuse I hear from the Craft Center is they need a schedule that helps teach the kids how to win. Please. This is Kentucky. The kids should come here knowing how to win.

3. Stop discounting Kentucky kids. That doesn't mean the roster should be filled with nothing but in-state players. But while not a single UK player made the All-SEC Freshman Team, Bryan Station product Shelvin Mack was averaging 11.7 points and 3.5 assists per game as a freshman at Butler. Steffphon Pettigrew, a sophomore from Elizabethtown, was averaging 12.7 points and 5.1 rebounds at Western Kentucky. I'm just saying.

4. Respect the uniform. If a player refuses to come into the game, he shouldn't be playing 27 minutes the next night. If a player quits the team in a huff — if that's truly what happened — should he really be in at a key time of the next game?

And, by the way, we're all tired of the Bob Knight-era mind games, of the rumors about lockers being emptied and nameplates removed, of rumors about whether so-and-so was allowed to ride home on the team bus.

5. Take better care of your former players. If you think the current players aren't happy, talk to the former ones. Most say all they feel is a cold shoulder.

They lost their one connection to the basketball office when longtime secretary Marta McMackin was transferred, then retired. That's one reason why players such as Mike Casey, Kenny Walker and Jay Shidler have spoken out publicly about the problems at the Craft Center.

And when was the last time UK retired a jersey at Rupp, anyway?

6. Remember what you represent. Don't be boorish in halftime TV interviews or post-game radio shows. Don't accept ESPN's request for an all-access feature, then limit the access. Don't ignore boosters who travel on trips.

Don't tell a media member who is trying to give you a compliment — as a Florida writer did by remarking that UK took the Gators' Nick Calathes out of the game — that he doesn't know how basketball should be played. Is that too much to ask?

7. No more one-man committee. Under most circumstances a coach deserves more than two years in a job, but if Barnhart and Todd honestly believe the situation has become untenable, so be it. But next time, no more one-man search committee.

This state, this university, this fan base has plenty of knowledgeable minds about the game of basketball who would love to help with the process. This time, I'd use some of that brainpower.

After all, I'm guessing that the Billy G. Kentucky basketball has (so far) is not quite the Billy G. it expected.

That can't happen again.

Yusuf Acar, Sushil Bansal Of Advanced Integrated Technologies Arrested

Yusuf Acar has got our attention because he was a D.C. government worker and worked for the men whom the President Obama chose to be the nation's first Chief Technology Officer.

Now FOX News reports the arrests of Yusuf Acar, as well as Sushil Bansal, who worked for the Advanced Integrated Technologies Corporation (AITC), which is an end-to-end Technology and Business Process Outsourcing Services company, serving the Government and Commercial sectors in the global market through multiple onshore and offshore centers, based out of USA and India.

According to Fox News FBI spokeswoman Lindsay Gotwin would not describe the nature of the probe in the case of Yusuf Acr. "It's an ongoing law enforcement investigation," she said.

FBI is not revealing the nature of the allegations that led to Yusuf Acar's arrest, who is 40. Acar was taken into custody this morning by FBI agents at his home in Northwest Washington. However, Washington Post's source said Yusuf "Acar solicited and accepted bribes from Bansal and awarded contracts to his company. Bansal's company also charged, with Acar's knowledge, the District for "ghost employees," who did no work, the source said."

AITC had announced last year that the Association of Indians in America (Washington DC Chapter) selected Mr. Sushil Bansal for the Entrepreneur of the Year Award. The award ceremony was held on August 10, 2008 in Rockville, Maryland. Mr. Bansal was selected for this award for his outstanding contribution in the field of information technology and to the growth of AITC. Mr. Bansal is founder and CEO of AITC.

Washpost story reveals that Yusuf Acar has worked for the city "since 2004 and earns $127,468. He worked for Vivek Kundra, the city's chief technology officer, who recently left D.C. government to become President Obama's federal chief information officer. Kundra is not suspected of any wrongdoing, the source said."

Big Ten Network President Predicts Profitable 2009

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Big Ten Network President Mark Silverman says 2009 should be the two-year-old cable network's first full year of profitability.

Silverman says he hasn't yet put together a detailed forecast, but he says the network should be profitable based on growing advertising revenue and money from new international distribution deals.

Parent company News Corp. has said the network recorded its first profitable quarter late last year.

Silverman says the network's biggest source of revenue is the fees cable companies and satellite distributors pay to carry it. He declined to provide specifics.

Silverman on Wednesday said he also plans to work on network production quality. And he wants to produce more original programs, such as a game show.

Madoff Guilty Of Ponzi Scheme - SEC Charges Two Others

After Bernie Madoff is pleaded guilty in a Ponzi Scheme and ordered to jail SEC has charged two others from California in a multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme type of investment fraud.

The Securities and Exchange Commission today charged Northern California residents Anthony Vassallo and Kenneth Kenitzer for orchestrating a multi-million dollar investment fraud. Vassallo agreed to a court order freezing his assets. The SEC is seeking an emergency court order to also freeze the assets of Vassallo's company, Equity Investment Management and Trading, Inc. (EIMT).

According to the SEC's complaint, Vassallo and Kenitzer raised more than $40 million from about 150 investors from approximately May 2004 to November 2008. Vassallo told investors, many of whom he met through his church, that he had a proprietary computer software program that allowed him to buy and sell stock options and generate returns of 3.5 percent per month with little risk of loss. The SEC alleges that Vassallo and Kenitzer instead used investors' money for unauthorized purposes, including a variety of other schemes never disclosed to investors.

"Today's action reaffirms that the SEC will take immediate steps to preserve assets for investors victimized in fraudulent investment schemes," said Marc Fagel, Director of the SEC's San Francisco Regional Office. "The defendants' deception went so far as fabricating computer 'screen shots' for investors that purported to show more than $50 million in securities holdings, when in fact they had completely emptied the brokerage accounts."

The SEC's complaint, filed in federal court in Sacramento, alleges that Vassallo told investors that their money was being invested in securities pursuant to a proprietary trading strategy that promised high returns with minimal risk. From September 2007 through approximately November 2008, Kenitzer, who participated in EIMT's day-to-day operations, posted false trading results on the company's Web site and distributed phony investment reports to investors that led them to believe EIMT was achieving consistent, positive returns. According to the SEC's complaint, EIMT actually had not conducted any stock trades since at least September 2007, when its brokerage firm terminated Vassallo's trading privileges. The SEC alleges that Vassallo and Kenitzer kept the scheme going by using money raised from new investors to pay earlier investors, a classic hallmark of a Ponzi scheme.

The SEC's complaint charges Vassallo, Kenitzer and EIMT with violations of the anti-fraud provisions of the federal securities laws. In addition to an emergency order freezing EIMT's assets, the SEC seeks injunctive relief, disgorgement of defendants' ill-gotten gains, and financial penalties.

The SEC acknowledges the assistance of the United States Attorney's Office, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Internal Revenue Service.

The naming rights to the western hemisphere’s tallest building have been handed over to a London-based insurance broker that will move 500 employees into the Chicago skyscraper, Crain’s Chicago Business reported Thursday.

Willis told Crain’s that they are paying $14.50 per square foot in the 110-story building, but is not paying extra for the naming rights.

"They own the building," Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley said. "They should name it, sure. Sears moved out a long time ago."

The tower was the world's tallest building until 1996, when it was surpassed by the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Granville played center for Ohio State University's men's basketball team and was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers in the second round of the 1983 NBA Draft.

The Blazers sold their draft rights to the Indiana Pacers, and Waiters spent his first two seasons in Indiana. He then played for the Houston Rockets and Chicago Bulls until leaving the NBA for Europe in 1988.

Ken Shamrock Beats Ross Clifton, Tank Abbott Beats Mike Bourke

In a couple of freak show fights featuring competitors who are either morbidly obese, over the hill, or both, Ken Shamrock Tank Abbott defeated Mike Bourke at the Wargods MMA event in Fresno on Saturday night.

Shamrock punched Clifton at the start of the fight to knock him to the ground, then put him in an arm bar and submitted him. It was, mercifully, short and quick.

Shamrock weighed in at 205 pounds, while Clifton weighed in at 380. The official write-up at Sherdog, which streamed the fight, says, "the size advantage didn't help Clifton at all." That's an utterly ridiculous thing to say; simply having an extra couple hundred pounds of body fat doesn't give Clifton a "size advantage." Clifton is a big, fat slob, and that's why Shamrock chose him as an opponent: Shamrock was on a five-fight losing streak and wanted someone he knew he could beat. Shamrock improves his career record to 27-13-2. Clifton falls to 6-9.

As for Abbott, who was last seen getting knocked out by Kimbo Slice last year, he knocked out Bourke in 29 seconds. That's nothing unusual for Bourke, who has been knocked out in 11 seconds and in 17 seconds in the past. Bourke now has a career record of 8-12-1. Abbott improved his record to 10-14.

Up next, apparently, is another freak show: Shamrock vs. Abbott is tentatively scheduled for April.

This Year Valentine’s Day is a Slam Dunk

Hallmark holidays be damned. It’s NBA All-Star Weekend.

I’m talking East Coast vs. West Coast, hard-core basketball playing. Some of the country’s greatest ballers — Kobe Bryant, Paul Pierce, Yao Ming and LeBron James — will all hit the court and show off their skills.

With all that excitement, Cupid can kick rocks.

I know that’s heresy, but I, for one, don’t take Valentine’s Day all that seriously.
There are tons of stories of how it all began (bird mating, a martyred priest and all that) but most people say it’s about celebrating God’s gift of love. And that is an awesome gift. But what part of long-stem roses, cheap chocolates and an overly expensive dinner celebrates it? That sounds like an economic stimulus package to me.
Shouldn’t we rejoice in our loved ones every day? Shouldn’t we be thankful for the blessing and do nice things for them all the time? Why save it all for one day, filled with cliché and overbooked restaurants?

I’m not hating on Valentine’s Day. I’ve been known to celebrate it on occasion. It can be exciting. But when I celebrate, I like it to be meaningful. Going to Dave & Buster’s with my crush last year trumped any four-star restaurant, because it was just us, having fun.

And a holiday all about love shouldn’t be focused solely on women. There are two people in a relationship, not one. Men deserve to be celebrated, too.

So this year, maybe we should flip the script for the gentlemen in our lives. Ladies, as I said before, it is NBA All-Star Weekend.

The three-point shoot-out, the skills challenge and the highly anticipated slam-dunk contest — it all goes down tonight, on Valentine’s Day.
So if you want to do something romantic, and he’s a basketball fan, let him watch the festivities.

Order in some food, kick back on the couch and watch some serious basketball stars go hard in the paint.

Or maybe he likes video games. Try having a Wii marathon or find something you both can play on PS3. If he’s a music lover, celebrate Sunday by checking out that Keith Sweat and Maze show at Municipal Auditorium.

Feb. 14 is just one day out of the entire year. It’s no fun if you feel obligated to celebrate. And society does make it seem like you’re an alien if you don’t have a Valentine. Other women can make you feel crazy if your man doesn’t break the bank.
I like the idea of having yet another reason to spend time with the man who makes me smile — but it’s another reason, not the only reason.

If you’re into fancy dining, bouquets of flowers and boxed chocolates, hey, do your thing. Just make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons.

And if you’re not, is it really worth missing out on Dwight Howard defending his Sprite Slam Dunk title?

Brad Pitt’s Brother Proud of Oscar Nomination

Brad Pitt received his second Oscar nomination for the movie “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”. The movie has a total of 13 nominations including Best Actor for Brad Pitt and Best Picture.

During a recent interview with Pitt’s family in Springfield, Doug Pitt expressed his feelings about his brother’s Oscar Nomination: “Let’s just say we were hopeful. But again, it’s a nice pat on the back. The movie stands on its own. But, what a great honor, for he, and Angie both,” he told KSMU’s Nathan McVay.

Angelina Jolie, Pitt’s partner also received an Oscar Nod for her role in the movie: “The Changeling”. “We are excited for both of them. I think they are both great at what they do. Great people, and I am just glad they got the recognition,” he also told McVay.

McVay further asks Doug that should Brad win, would he come back to Springfield and show his Oscar around town. “Ha, no, I think he will turn around and get back to work,” he said.

Brad Pitt was nominated in 1996 for his role in “12 Monkeys”, but lost to Kevin Spacey for his performance in “The Usual Suspects”.

“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” also stars Julia Ormond, Cate Blanchett and Tilda Swinton. The movie is about a man whose mind ages normally but whose body ages backward.

Pro Bowl - Fitzgerald Ignites NFC to Comeback Win!

Larry Fitzgerald of the Cardinals caught two touchdown passes, and the NFC took the glory on three second half takeaways to rally past the AFC 30-21.

The AFC controlled the game in most statistical categories, including a 415-309 advantage in yards gained and a 36:14 -to- 23:46 edge in possession time. The AFC secured a 14-10 lead at halftime.

Fitzgerald completed the game with five catches for 81 yards, earning game MVP honors. His first touchdown catch was a 46-yard bomb from Saints' quarterback Drew Brees as time expired in the first half.

The Chiefs' tight end, Tony Gonzalez, led the AFC with six catches for 98 yards and one touchdown. The Panthers' wide receiver, Steve Smith, added six catches for 89 yards for the winners.

NASCAR: 2009 Budweiser Shootout at Daytona

Kevin Harvick captured the 2009 Budweiser Shootout at Daytona even though he was experiencing numerous problems during the night.

It was during the first 25 lap segment that Harvick was squeezed into the wall by Brian Vickers and suffered damage to his right front fender. Shortly after that he fell back out of the draft, but thanks to his crew, his crew they got him back into the race.

He was near the front in the final laps and got a push from Denny Hamlin to take the lead from Jamie McMurray in turn three just seconds before the final caution came out freezing the field.

It was in turn three, just seconds before the final caution that Denny Hamlin gave Harvick a push that positioned him to take the lead from Jamie McMurray.

Tony Stewart finished third, followed by Jeff Gordon and A. J. Allmendinger.

Adam Morrison traded to the Lakers

The Charlotte Bobcats sent Morrison and forward Shannon Brown packing today, and in return received the Lakers' Vladamir Radmanovich.

This trade immediately impacts Charlotte's rotation. The Bobcats' Boris Diaw stands to lose some value with the presence of another smooth-shooting power forward. Expect Radmanovich to average 15-20 minutes per game, which is a larger role than he had with the Lakers.

In Los Angeles, there should be very little impact. The deal simply provides some extra backcourt depth, which is something they already had plenty of.
